Why do a Bone Mineral Density Scan(BMD)?


  


Bone Mineral Density(BMD) is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis. Osteoporosis, which means "porous bone" is a disease in which there is a loss of bone tissue. This makes bones brittle and more prone to breakage. Some common causes of osteoporosis includes:
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Inadequate
  • Menopause
  • Simultaneous illness, hormonal irregularities and thyroid disorders

Bone Mineral Density(BMD) is also effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. 

Who should have a Bone Mineral Density(BMD)?

Individuals who have the following condition /s :
  • a fracture following a minor fall or injury
  • loss of height due to fracture of a vertebra(back bone)
  • taken steroid tablets for three months or more
  • an early menopause(aged less than 45)
  • a histroy of periods stopping (amenorrhoea) for more than one year before the menopause
  • other disorders associated with osteoporosis such as rheumatoid arthritis or coeliac disease
  • a family histroy of hip fracture on your mother's side or smoking
  • a body mass index of less than 19 (that is, if you are very underweight)
  • a post-menopausal woman who is tall (over 1.7 metres) or thin (less than 56.7 kilograms)
  • a man with clinical conditions associated with bone loss
